Judo, originated in Japan, is a sport that combines training of the mind and fighting skills. The introduction of judo to Taiwan is much earlier than that to Mainland China because the island was taken over by the Japanese government after the Sino-Japanese War ended in 1895. As a large amount of Japanese police officers and soldiers were sent to Taiwan, judo became more and more popular among Taiwanese people, who not only learned the skills of judo, but also the spirits of samurai that had been developed since the time of Sengoku Jidai. It was the heyday of judo in Taiwan when the island was ruled by the Japanese government, during which time butokokai were established in different local areas where many Taiwanese learned judo from instructors. Some of them even went to Japan to learn judo. These pioneers of judo built the foundation for promoting judo after Taiwan was turned back to the Nationalist government. Pushed by the militarism, Japan invaded China and started the World War Ⅱ. Taiwan, ruled by the Japanese government, was also involved in the war. It was then when judo became a political tool that aimed to turn Taiwanese into people that subjected to the Japanese emperor. This study described the historic backgrounds and development of judo when it was introduced to Taiwan and developed during the time of Japanese governing. Although being ruled by a foreign government was truly sad, people in Taiwan was led into the modern era and got in touch with different cultures and spirits.
