The purpose of this article is to develop a frame of reference to facilitate the personal interaction for chronic psychiatric patients in group settings. The structure of this frame of reference includes theoretical base, function / dysfunction continua, behavior and physical signs indicative of function and dysfunction, and postulates regarding change. The problem identified here is passivity. The, components of this problem are interactional behavior and self-efficacy. Theoretical postulates are selected from social learning theory, group dynamics, theoretical information about passivity, and theory of human motivation. These theoretical postulates serve as guidelines for the problem identification and resolution.
