With the continuous progression of marketization reform, the hot topic of whether the deployment mechanism of the market has played a role on energy efficiency improvement, and whether the improvement of energy efficiency promoted the marketization draw academic concerns in energy economics field. Based on GMM (Generalized Method of Moments) method, we run Granger causality test using a panel of 30 provinces of Chinese mainland from 1997 to 2009. The results showed that there was a long-term stable equilibrium relationship between the marketization and energy efficiency, and the casual relationships between the two terms were bidirectional causality in both long-term and short-term, namely, marketization reforms might promote the improvement of energy efficiency while the energy efficiency may also contribute to the deep marketization further. Finally, this paper proposed suggestions such as promoting industrial restructuring and replacing coal to clean alternative energy using market mechanism.
