The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of life and its correlates among pregnant women in different trimesters. To explore factors affecting the quality of life of pregnant women in different trimesters, a survey was conducted. Based on a descriptive and comparative cross-sectional approach, this study conducted a structured questionnaire to collect data via a convenience sampling. The sample consisted of 541 pregnant women who visited hospitals or medical centers in southern regions of Taiwan for prenatal examination. Data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0 using methods of descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and regression analysis. Results showed that pregnant women in the third trimester had better quality of life than those in the first. For women in the first trimester, gestational weeks were a factor affecting their quality of life. Women in the earlier weeks of pregnancy tended to suffer more uncomfortable symptoms, which would result in higher prenatal stress and poorer quality of life. For pregnant women in the second or third trimester, individual monthly income or household monthly income was a factor affecting their quality of life. Women with a lower individual or household income tended to suffer more uncomfortable symptoms, which would result in higher prenatal stress and poorer quality of life. This study obtained empirical results regarding the quality of life and its correlates of pregnant women in different trimesters. The results can be a reference for nursing and midwifery education, as well as clinical care in improving the quality of life of pregnant women in all trimesters.
