Zine Yourself: A Semester of Identity-building and Self-becoming

After leaving my hometown Chia-yi, I came to Taipei to have my college life. As I met with different things and different people in hugely different situations and experienced about the speedy change of my hometown, which made me keep asking “who I am,” I tried so hard, hoping I can find out and make sure the self of me in those tumultuous memories and situations. However, I have to face the music that everything I had encountered just brought me up like this. And I am the one who owns the agency for my transformation. For those reasons, I began to think about what “Self-identity” is? How do we identify a self? And what can we do to face this chaotic world, and solve our anxiety when we feel confused about the identity? I have tasted the flavor about art-making and meaning-making after studying in Graduate Institute of Arts and Humanities Education. Each time when I practiced, the process of art practice became the possibility of creating and making self. I asked why we could only search out identity from past. Why are we still looking for ourselves from some kinds of origination or from someone’s mind and society-worth? Through some Feminism and Cultural studied text, I tried to communicate with those theories by practicing. I tried to use the viewpoint of “becoming” to comprehend that “Identity” is actually practiced in different relationship and situations. Moreover, ”Situated knowledge” and “Viewpoint theory” mentioned by some feminists can probably be the way to confront the chaos and help me practice “becoming”. In the study, I used the point of view from post-colonialism and feminism to figure out what Identity and Becoming are. And I researched some different artists who mentioned about Self-identity through their art practice and tried to recommend the hypothesis of folding art-making/meaning-making/self-making. It became the strategy of the investigation about my problematic “How can we build our identity and practice self-becoming through art-making?” I have planned to design an art education project with “zine” as the form of art practice in MeiShan Elementary School for the participants. I used “Art practice as research” as main research method to explore whether we can use art-making to practice meaning-making and self-making or not and use “Viewpoint theory” as the background knowledge for practicing the study. I hope the entire participations can explore the meaning of “becoming self,” find out the strategy of “becoming self,” and practice it through the process of making zines. From participants’ zines and from other texts which are related to zines, I have discovered that those participants really felt about being themselves, experienced a different self, and identified themselves when they practiced their artworks with their own strength and thought. At the same time, they developed their own strategy to face the different situations. This finding verified that people really can use art-making to practice meaning-making and self-making and revealed that through the in-between space which was created for differences to encounter by the art practice, people can build their own situated knowledge and practice “self-becoming”. For this reason, as my conclusion, art practice became the action for subverting “One” identity and became the action for practicing “self-becoming”.
