The University Museum in Taiwan is in a diversified development stage but difficult to clarify its position. How to attract more visitors into museum and audience’s identity becomes an important issue. Through understanding the university museum’s closest audience, the university students’ motivations and identities in visiting the museum, the study aims to explore the influences of the University Museum to students of different academic backgrounds and museum experiences to provide suggestion of future development of exhibitions. The National Cheng Kung University Museum is applied as a case of study by questionnaires to investigate NCKU students’ visiting experiences. The result of this research shows that the primary motivations of students to visit the museum are curiosity, occasionally pass by, the course requirement and the identity as the NCKU student identity. Among the course requirement, the college of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences incorporate the resources of the university museum into their curriculum more often than any other college. In addition, the analysis of questionnaires shows that students are most interest in delicate objects and life-experience related exhibits. Secondly, there is a strong identity with NCKU’s professional accomplishments and its history and culture, influenced by the duration of academic years. Also, graduate students have stronger identity than undergraduate students. But overall, the exhibition lacks inspiration of reflexivity. In general, the subject students are mostly accidental or one-time visitors, without the habit of visiting museums. According to the research results, six suggestions are proposed to the NCKU museum. First, the exhibition should connect students' life experiences and background knowledge by multi-media design. Secondly, there should be more exhibitions about students’ lives. Thirdly, the exhibition of the history should be linked to the university today and contemporary social issues. Fourthly, the museum should enhance the connection to the curriculum with colleges of engineering, management and medicine. Fifthly, the museum can arrange courses of tour guide about the NCKU history and culture for students. Lastly, the museum should provide a variety of learning connection to students with different museum experiences.
