Jian-Guo Market, located at the Central District of Taichung City, has a rather short history, but its various roles in the urban market have made it a popular retail and wholesale marketplace. However, facing the relocation of the downtown to the west and the regional integration under Railway Rapid Transit Systematization, the market function will be transferred completely. As a result, Jian-Guo Market is gradually turning into ruins and undergoing progressive idling. This project uses the unique charm of the old town of the Central District and the pedestrian-friendly space, linking the historical memories by walking paths. Along with the change of regional plan, namely the Railway Cultural Park, this project provides Jian-Guo Market with an opportunity for transformation and development. After turning into an art settlement, Jian-Guo Market reserves part of the local market function. Visitors can walk through the art settlement and marketplace, taste the local delicacies and view the art activities. The resident artists together create the innovative yet traditional market culture for the visitors through creative arts, local experiences (food) and pedestrian observation.
