This case study demonstrated an acute care experience of applying Tornstam's Gerotranscendence Theory (GTT) to promote positive developments of an elderly patient with acute myocardial infarction in an intensive care unit. Both objective and subjective data were collected by observations, discussions, and telephone interviews. One of the major care problems lied in his profound worry about physical morbidity, which resulted in poor quality of diet, sleep, and activity statuses, and low self esteem. Therefore the major concepts of GTT and reminiscence therapy were utilized to encourage the case to explore his life experience and prominent achievements in order to adjust his self perception, improve his life quality, and promote his aging journey successfully. Details would be discussed in the main context for the medical team members to apply GTT into individualized care with quality improvement.
