An Assessment of the Undergraduate Curriculum by Dental Graduates

The purpose of this survey is to understand recent dental graduates'perceptions of adequacy of theweighting and quality of their undergraduate curriculum relevant to their present practice of dentistry.Questionnaires were sent to 95 graduates who graduated from National Taiwan University between1994 and 1998,and who are now practicing dentistryin Taiwan. The response rate was 70.5%.Respondents were divided into two groups:those in privatepractice and university hospital practice. The graduates in both groups had comparable views concerning the weighting and quality of their coursework.Although the ranking of the courses showed minordifferences between the two groups, their views onthe least adequate course were the same. The graduates reported that overall weighting and quality oftheir dental courses were above average, except fororthodontics which needed more emphasis on bothweighting and quality. The graduates felt that theyreceived very good training in endodontics, but, clinical experience in the areas of pediatric dentistryand orthodontics could have been more extensive. The graduates felt that dental education in the basicmedical sciences was more than adequate, and as aresult, their weighting and quality were tops amongall course groups. The degree of self-confidence forsolo practice was higher in the private practice group. This degree of confidence grew as time after graduation increased. However, the degree of confidencein the doctor-patient relationship remained relativelyunchanged among graduates regardless of the lengthof time after graduation. The graduates suggested agreater emphasis on comprehensive patient care, anearlier introduction to working with patients, the addition of practice management into a new curriculum, and the integration of more basic sciences intoclinical sciences, etc.Adding new courses into thecurriculum is not possible due to the overloaded situation which already exists with earned credit. However, providing continuing education and conductinga problem-based teaching program through smallgroup tutorials will improve students'attitude towards life-long learning, which can help alleviate theproblem of time limitations for studying in dentalschool and also improve their confidence in buildingdoctor-patient relationships.(Full text in Chinese)
