In 1994, a wilt disease occurred on Texas blue bell (Eustoma grandiflorum L.) planted in autumn at Yenpu arce of Pingtung. The characteristic symptom of this disease was wilting of plants with long yellow-brown stripe lesion on the stem. The disease was identified as a bacterial wilt caused by Pseudonwnas solanacearum. Five test strains of this bacterium from Texas blue bell belonged to race 1, biovar 4. Strains of P. soIanacearum from tomato, perilla, radish and bird-of-paradise also caused wilting of Texas blue bell plants with the stem-pricking inoculation.
