The purpose of this study is to find out the length and width’s proportion of Chinese characters through the prototype experiment of collected handwriting samples. According to the result of experiment, the length of Chinese characters is wider than the width. The proportion is almost close to a quadrate. And the numbers of strokes also play an important role in the proportion. The square of high number strokes’ character is bigger than low number strokes’ character. Different type categories cause different results. The proportion of certain type categories have the feature of larger width than length. The result of this study reveals that the proportion of hand written Chinese characters is 9:11, which is not the same as the proportion of 1:1 used in contemporary Chinese computer font.
