The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aging and exercise on the supply of the capillary of the skeletal muscle. Sixteen adult (18 months) and sixteen old (28 months) male Fischer344 rats were divided into adult control, adult exercise, old control, and old exercise groups. The exercise was 8 weeks, and it was 4 days/week, with each exercise bout running 75% VO2(subscript max). Froml(superscript st) to 4(superscript th) week exercise duration were 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes and 75 minutes. But from 5(superscript th) to 8(superscript th) week exercise duration was 90 minutes. Capillary was identified histological and muscle fiber types were determined by using adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) histochemistry. The results of this study showed the gastronemius weight, gastronemius weight/body weight, capillary/muscle (C/F) and the capillaries of surrounding Fast, glycolytic fibers (FG fiber) were declined with aging, but the capillaries of surrounding slow, oxidative fibers (SO fiber), fast, oxidative, glcolytic fibers (FOG fiber) were not declined with aging. The exercise increased gastronemius weight/body weight, capillaries of surrounding SO, FG, FOG fiber and C/F in both the adult and the old groups. The results of this study indicated that the exercise had effect on capillary supply of gastrocnemius in both the adult group and the old group.
