This correlational study investigated the possible relationships between workplace stressors, work stress and social support among new nurses. The sample consisted of eighty-seven nurses who had been working approximately a year in a regional teaching hospital in Kaohsiung. The three variables were measured using three instruments: a demographic and work questionnaire, a workplace stressor scale, and a social support scale. Results showed that new nurses were experiencing a moderate level of work stress (mean score=61.6). Two major workplace stressors were <||>time control<||> and <||>adaptation.<||> New nurses reported a moderately high level of social support (mean score=73.5). Over 80 percent of the new nurses gained their support from friends and senior nurses. However, there was no significant correlation between social support and work stress or workplace stressors. These findings suggest that nursing administrators can reduce the work stress of new nurses by cultivating their time management skills, inquiring into how they are adapting, and building a staff support network.
