The establishment of applied Japanese department is regarded as a critical revolution in Japanese language education. To meet the social trend and the requirements for Japanese talents, many universities set up “applied Japanese department” instead of “Japanese department”. However current Japanese learners, even the teachers and students of some applied Japanese departments, don’t understand the differences between applied Japanese department and Japanese department. The major reason is that most universities don’t have clear definition for “applied Japanese” which makes the position of applied Japanese department unspecific. Moreover, the lack of specific teaching purpose and educational objectives of applied Japanese department also lead to misunderstanding of applied Japanese. Thus I am trying in my article to further study the relationship between department names and teaching objectives as well as the positioning and development of applied Japanese department through the comparison and analysis of applied Japanese department of each university.
