Background: Nursing preceptors play an important role in successful transition of less experienced or novice nurses to independence practice; however, preceptors often experience anxiety and stress due to their multifaceted responsibilities for the preceptee in current complex healthcare environment. Strategies are needed to help nursing preceptors relieve stress and improve resilience. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on anxiety and resilience among nursing preceptors. Method: This study used one-group longitudinal pretest-posttest design to evaluate whether a mindfulness- based stress reduction intervention had an effect on anxiety and resilience in a sample of 35 nursing preceptors from a medical center in northern Taiwan (This Study provided 25 hours of MBSR program, included two time of fele-conference (4 hours) during four weeks.) Subjects completed questionnaires of situational anxiety, trait anxiety and resilience at baseline, and post-test and 2 months after the intervention. Results: The findings showed that nursing preceptors reported decreased situational anxiety and improved resilience at both post-test and 2 months after the intervention, and reduced trait anxiety at 2 months after the intervention. Conclusion: Our results suggest that a mindfulness-based stress reduction intervention is effective in reducing anxiety and increasing resilience in nursing preceptors. Future experimental trails are needed to establish more robust evaluation for the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction in this population.
