An Electroencephalographic Study on the Relationship between Physical Fitness and Frontal Activity in Preschool Boys

This study examined the relationship between physical fitness and frontal activity on EEG power in healthy preschool children. The participants were 48 boys between the ages of 5 and 5.5. Each participant was tested with the Children Physical Fitness Test, including one foot balance, standing board jump, 10-meter shuttle run, sit-and-reach, sit-ups, and 20-meter dash, to determine their fitness performance. The EEG was recorded from 12 sites (F3, Fz, F4, C3, Cz, C4, P3, Pz, P4, O1, Oz, O2) with linked earlobes as a reference, and eyes closed for 3 minutes under a resting situation. Frontal asymmetry (1n F4 minus 1n F3 power) was computed for the pairs of EEG leads within the frontal region. Pearson's coefficient was used to determine the relationships between physical fitness, frontal asymmetry and frontal leads in the delta (1.5-3.5HZ), theta (3.5-7.5HZ), alpha-1 (7.5-9.5Hz), alpha-2 (9.5-12.5Hz), and alpha (7.5-12.5HZ) bands. The results indicated there were negative correlations between sit-ups and frontal asymmetry in alpha-2 band (r=-.39, p=.006), and negative correlations between standing broad jump and both left and right anterior frontal lobes in the theta and delta bands (F3 theta, r=-.40, p=.005; F4 theta, r=-.37, p=.01; F3 delta, r=-.46, p=.001, and F4 delta, r=-.48, p=.001). In conclusion, results showed that physical fitness and left frontal activation were positively related, which suggested that good fitness was related to positive affects and approach motivation. Negative association was found between physical fitness and slow frequency activity, which implied that good fitness was related to frontal maturation.
