During the Japanese occupation period, from Chiayi County to Kaohsiung City, along the southwest coast of Taiwan, there were about 5,000 hectares of salt fields. However, due to the increasing of labor cost and the international market competition, the salt industry in Taiwan had declined. The salt fields were abandoned, and the relevant salt industry facilities, like Beimen Salt Washing Factory, stood idle. This article mainly uses the method of literature collection and analysis and in-depth interviews to explain the history and causes of idle facilities in the salt industry, as well as the current status of the transformation into tourism and recreation. The results show that the activation of idle facilities must be combined with local culture and cultural creativity, which can give new life to old facilities.
