A peristaltic infusion pump actuated by shape memory alloys (SMAs) with low noise and weak vibration is proposed in this study. An actuator based on SMA wires is designed first; successive squeezes of the SMA actuators on the tubes develop a peristaltic motion and thus pump the liquid forward. A mathematical model is presented for the peristaltic infusion pump to predict its average output flow rate. In the modeling process, effective stroke number in a cycle is obtained according to the actuation sequence. Stroke volume is related to the geometrical design variables: tube radius, effective squeeze width and lever arm ratio. The time interval of a cycle depends on the electric current that heats the SMA wire. In case study, relationship between the output flow rate and heating current is analyzed. A prototype of peristaltic infusion pump is fabricated in the laboratory. Experimental data of average output flow rate is obtained under different heating current and the results validate the effectiveness of the mathematical model.
