The Preservation and Revitalization of Hakka Huofang: A Case of the Jiadong Siao House

The Siao Family House, located in Jiadong Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan (the Jiadong Siao House), is the residence of a Hakka family and is replete with distinctive architectural features, historical value, and cultural artifacts. Preserved with the house is a representative Hakka huofang ("kitchen"). In 1985, the house was appointed as a county-designated historic site, under the residence category. Currently, the preservation and revitalization of the Jiadong Siao House are regulated under the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, which emphasizes its value, reuse, and revitalization. This research took a qualitative approach by conducting ethnographic interviews and field observations. We investigated how the renovation of the house influenced the residents' lives during and after the process. The Siao descendants established the Jiadong Siao House Council to supervise the operation and management of this historic site. As summarized from research data, the residents are satisfied with the restoration of the Jiadong Siao House. With the residents maintaining the house, the service life of the house can be extended. However, because of limitations in the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, the restoration caused some inconvenience to the residents' lives. This research suggests that the residents should participate more actively in the restoration process to avoid such inconveniences. Currently, the Jiadong Siao House Council operates efficiently. The Siao descendants who work as the house's tour guides have positive attitudes toward their jobs. After 2012, the Council planned day-trip packages to enrich the visitor experience in the Jiadong Siao House, which aids the spread of Hakka culture. This research suggests the establishment of a fund for future preservation projects and the training of more professional tour guides to ensure the sustainable management of the Jiadong Siao House.
