At present, the operation mode of many touch panel products are designed according to the designers subjective perception. This study seeks to find whether or not current operation modes are intuitive operation modes, to discover the true intuitive gestures for operating touch panels and compare differences. This study divides the experiment into two parts: simulated operation and verification. The simulated operation experiment asks subjects to operate multi-touch panels of three different sizes, and complete eight tasks: select object, execute object, move object, scroll up and down, change pages, freely and proportionally enlarge/reduce object, and rotate object, observing the intuitive gestures for each operation. The verification experiment uses a real interactive panel to verify operations. The study then uses time difference, error rate and gesture operation mode as indicators for evaluating effectiveness. Experiment results were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, cross matching, descriptive statistics, and LSD; for subjective evaluation, SUS and NASA were used for analysis. The simulated operation and verification experiments both show that most subjects operated the small touch panel vertically and the middle and large touch panels horizontally. In operation tasks, multi-touch and variation in gestures significantly increased for the tasks: enlarge/reduce object and rotate object. Significant difference existed between panel size and gestures, larger panels resulted in higher multi-touch ratio. The ratio of multi-touch increased when panels were fixed compared with when handheld.
