How to interpret the values of cultural heritage? And how should we resolve the conflicts over different interpretations and gain more pleasure among different interpretive community? Is there another way of seeing that allows more harmony in the process of interpretations that “damage” and “division” are transformed into positive power to “construct” and “integrate”, like the “communal conflicts” described by George Simpson? This essay discusses the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall as an example among the most controversial on the discourse of universal value to interpret its value as a cultural heritage. There are four parts to this essay. Firstly, this dissertation analyses paradigm shift of Hermeneutics to reflect on related topics that interpret the values of cultural heritage, and discourses how should we initiate and practice the interpretation for cultural heritage values based on Gadamer’s questioning philosophy. Besides, this research clarifies problematics that might appear during the interpreting process. Next, the essay constructs an interpreting model that reflects relations between “obvious specific properties” and “values” (historical, artistic, and scientific aspects) of cultural heritage to find dimensions that aid in interpreting in order to construct an initial structure for judging cultural heritage values. Following that, the essay practices the theoretical structure on the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall for the discourse of its historical, artistic, and scientific values. Finally, in conclusion, the essay continues to practice the Gadamer’s philosophy – ‘’questioning’’ and ‘’thinking’’ to discourse the significance of cultural heritage values. In “case studies”, the topic of monumentality re-enters the hermeneutical circle to reflect on the discourse of cultural heritage’s values constructed for the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall in this essay.
