THE INTERGENERATIONAL TRANSMISSION OF MENTAL HEALTH: A MEDIATIONAL ANALYSIS OF FAMILY COHESION

The current study examined intergenerational transmission of positive and negative mental health, specifically focusing on depression and self-esteem, as well as the mediational role of family cohesion. The data were retrieved from the Taiwan Youth Project, provided by the Academia Sinica. Participants were 2,851 adolescents and their 2,800 parents in 2000. Data were analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation model, and the bootstrap method for mediational analysis. The results confirmed the intergenerational transmission of mental health, in which parental self-esteem positively predicted self-esteem of their offspring, and parental depression positively predicted depression and negatively predicted self-esteem of their offspring. Regarding the mediational role of family cohesion, family cohesion was shown to partially mediate the effect of parental self-esteem on self-esteem and depression of offspring. Additionally, family cohesion was also shown to partially mediate the effect of parental depression on self-esteem and depression of offspring. Further discussion and recommendation were provided.
