This is an empirical study on formal aesthetics so in order to understand the relationship between the physical features of built environment and the human aesthetic responses, we undertook this study to explore different instruments and methods for empirical aesthetic evaluation, applied correlational analysis to aesthetic experience to solve the relationship between aesthetic factors and aesthetic responses, and examined the possible evaluation differences among college students with different attributes. In this study, we used pictures of interior design house furnished as the investigation instrument, and conducted two investigations. A total of 1176 effective samples were collected. The collected data were analyzed by the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and their cross validation were proved. The results show that among ten aesthetic factors, the aesthetic evaluations of interior/spatial design and non-design majors are significantly different with eight and nine factors respectively in the two investigations. The differences of aesthetic evaluation between male and female, and between the junior and the senior students, are relatively less than the differences between interior/spatial design majors and non-design ones; however, the ”B-succinct & steady” and the ”E-fashion & design” are the two factors which identically have high correlation with the differences between genders and among majors. This study urges that designers should beware of and recognize the fact that there are significant differences in aesthetic view between designers and laypersons.
