In recent decades volunteers have been increasing in number and importance in museums in Taiwan, and studies have been conducted on volunteer management-related issues in the museum field. However, problems that hinder the effectiveness and efficiency of volunteering in museums have rarely been addressed. This paper aims to put forth several problems and to suggest feasible solutions. Based on a literature review and the author's practical experience in volunteer management at the National Science and Technology Museum, problems of museum volunteer management from the aspects of the individual, organization and the entire museum will be discussed. Solutions to the problems that consider these different aspects will be recommended. This paper is expected to positively influence the management and research of volunteers within museums in Taiwan.
