Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the changes and progression that have occurred among serious leisure cyclists. Based on the concept of recreation specialization, this study identified the antecedents of recreation specialization, the effect of social mechanisms on recreation specialization, and the effect of recreation specialization on recreation behavior. Methods: Using the frequency of bike riding and enrollment in a bike team as base criteria for sample selection, this study selected 14 cyclists through purposive sampling. The in-depth interview method was used to collect relevant information, which was subsequently converted into verbatim text. A data-driven approach was adopted to classify and compare the groups. Results: First, not all cycling enthusiasts had a desire to advance their skills. Desire was found to be related to the cyclists’ age and initial motivation for riding. Second, individual and environmental factors were antecedents of recreation specialization. The changes and progression that have occurred among serious leisure cyclists can be explained through cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects. Third, some cycling enthusiasts were affected by career contingencies, but the effects of these contingencies were usually minimal, whereas with changes in life course, the young adult group was more likely to be affected compared with the other age groups in this study. Last, recreation specialization may influence individual systems, activity systems, and environmental systems. Conclusion: Although not all recreationists have a desire to be experts, the progression processes could help us understand the progress of serious leisure recreationists. Based on the findings, we present suggestions for those who wish to progress in cycling and also present future research opportunities.
